The REACH Method™

Architect

Determine and design what should be built or changed.

What Architect means

Architect carries two obligations, in order: determining what should be built or changed, and then designing it. Determination comes first because a well-drawn design of the wrong thing is still the wrong thing.

What gets designed is developed around the realities of the business - its situation, constraints, capacity, and purpose - rather than fitted to a predetermined formula. Two businesses that arrive with the same symptom do not necessarily leave this stage with the same design.

What happens during Architect

  • Setting a direction that the evidence from Evaluate actually supports.
  • Designing the strategy, systems, processes, and operational structure that direction requires.
  • Working out what that design depends on, and what it will ask of the business.
  • Deciding what will be built or changed - and what deliberately will not be.

What Architect asks of you

This is the stage where decisions are made. Reach brings research, analysis, and professional judgment to that point, and states a direction plainly - but the business belongs to you, and so do the decisions about it.

Architect produces a design, not a changed business. Putting it into practice is the next stage of the REACH Method.
